ENG: I don’t know whether hydras dream, but if their dreams are so captivating, it would seem reasonable to allow them to devour me for the sake of at least partially seizing the charm that hides in these, at first glance quite hideous, creatures. Hydras Dream, such a moniker was chosen by the pair of talented Swedish musicians, Anna von Hausswolff (the similarity in name isn’t accidental, she’s of course the daughter of Carl Michael) and Matti Bye. The result of their collaboration is an album released by Denovali, “The Little Match Girl”.
An interesting concept Anna and Matti have started within the initiative called Hydras Dream. Namely, they want to present their own musical interpretations of well- or lesser known stories, myths or films. The first one to be presented is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Little Match Girl”. The titles of the subsequent tracks permit the listener to follow the footsteps of a small, dirty girl until her poignant end in a dark alley of a frozen city in New Year’s Eve.
Having at least a little bit of composing talent, many musicians would have probably taken the easier path and created sentimental and cheap muzak in the neoclassical synth style. But these two are more talented than the majority of so called artists, and their ambitions are also significantly above the standard level. “The Little Match Girl” is accessible music, not particularly difficult to listen, but at the same time it isn’t trivial at all. Original and often created as a result of improvisation. Anna and Matti use both live instruments and electronics. Her voice also plays a significant role. They aren’t afraid to contaminate their often delicate and precise structures. Often they cut and loop them. They can take the listener by surprise, almost scare him (personally my heart leapt when after the first three, rather calm pieces they launch a sudden and merciless attack with a clatter of analogue synths in “Losing the Slippers”).
But for the most part of the disc melancholy and ethereal sounds flow from the speakers. Denovali writes about the concoction of experimental neoclassical and avant-garde dreampop – it’s hard to disagree. At a certain level “The Little Match Girl” reminds me of “Treny” by Polish artist Jacaszek, who in a similar manner reaches for literary classics and interprets them in a modern way, but with the utmost respect for the original. Avoiding trivial licks and self-admiration. Not taxing the listener’s patience nor his aesthetics. Just like “The Little Match Girl”. I think I’ll go to the attic now, and look for my old set of Andersen’s fairytales – with illustrations by Jan Marcin Szancer – and see how the work of Anna and Matti fits the written word. I keep my fingers crossed for their further actions.

PL: Nie wiem, czy hydry śnią, ale jeżeli ich marzenia bywają tak urokliwe, może warto byłoby dać się pożreć aby choćby w części przejąć czar, jaki kryć mogą te na pierwszy rzut oka dosyć odrażające stworzenia? Hydras Dream, taki właśnie szyld zafundowało sobie dwoje utalentowanych, pochodzących ze Szwecji muzyków, Anna von Hausswolff (zbieżność nazwisk nieprzypadkowa – to rzecz jasna córka Carla Michaela) oraz Matti Bye. Efektem ich współpracy jest ten oto album, wydany przez Denovali “The Little Match Girl”.
Ciekawa jest koncepcja jaką Anna i Matti obrali sobie wewnątrz inicjatywy zwanej Hydras Dream. Mianowicie chcą oni przedstawiać własne muzyczne interpretacje znanych lub mniej znanych opowiadań, mitów lub filmów. Na pierwszy ogień poszła tytułowa baśń Hansa Christiana Andersena, “Dziewczynka z Zapałkami”. tytuły kolejnych utworów prowadzą słuchacza śladami małej, brudnej dziewczynki aż do jej przejmującego końca w ciemnym zaułku skutego lodem miasta ostatniego dnia roku.
Wykazując choćby odrobinę talentu kompozytorskiego wielu zapewne obrałoby łatwiejszą drogę i stworzyło ckliwego i taniego muzaka spod znaku syntezatorowej neoklasyki. Ale tak się składa, że ci artyści zarówno talentu posiadają więcej, jak i ich ambicje sięgają znacząco ponad standardowy poziom. “The Little Match Girl” to przystępna muzyka, nieszczególnie trudna w słuchaniu, ale w wielu momentach wcale nieoczywista. Niebanalna. Często powstała w wyniku improwizacji. Anna i Matti wykorzystują zarówno żywe instrumenty, jak i elektronikę. Znaczącą rolę odgrywa również głos Szwedki. Nie boją się zabrudzić czasem swych delikatnych i precyzyjnych struktur nierzadko tnąc je i zapętlając. Potrafią mocno zaskoczyć, nieomal przestraszyć słuchacza (mnie osobiście serce podskoczyło, kiedy podczas pierwszego przesłuchania po trzech pierwszych, raczej wyciszonych fragmentach przypuścili nagły i bezlitosny atak jazgotem analogowych syntezatorów w “Losing the Slippers”).
Jednak przez większą część czasu trwania płyty z głośników płyną dźwięki melancholijne i eteryczne. Denovali pisze o miksturze eksperymentalnej neoklasyki i awangardowego dreampopu – trudno się nie zgodzić. Na pewnej płaszczyźnie “The Little Match Girl” kojarzy mi się z “Trenami” Jacaszka, który w podobny sposób sięgając w literacką klasykę interpretuje ją w sposób nowoczesny, ale z szacunkiem dla pierwowzoru. Unika trywialnych zagrywek, ale i nie wystawia cierpliwości ani zmysłu estetycznego słuchacza na próbę pławiąc się w samozachwycie. Podoba mi się “The Little Match Girl”. Chyba wybiorę się na strych, poszukam starego zbioru baśni Andersena (z ilustracjami Jana Marcina Szancera oczywiście) i sprawdzę jak twórczość Anny i Mattiego komponuje się ze słowem pisanym. No i trzymam kciuki za dalsze ich poczynania.
