Rasalasad Featuring Smell & Quim and irr. app. (ext.) – Untitled

Life is full of surprises. When I put this tape into my tape deck, I expected a noise blast that would blow my head off. But no. The A-side, Rasalasad Feat. irr.app.(ext.) – this is both the release title and the performers of the track – starts with an experimental, but rather calm sequence of analogue ambience. Subconsciously I was waiting and waiting for an explosion, but it never happened. And after a while I realized that’s not actually so bad.

Rasalasad is a project by Fernando Cerqueira who also owns the Thisco label. Apparently he’s the kind of musician who finds comfort in working with other artists. There were the collaborations with Hiroshi Hasegawa or Shhh… and his last album “Thismorphia” – which will also be featured on Santa Sangre soon – is filled with prominent guests like Jarboe, Merzbow or Emil Beaulieau. irr. app. (ext.) (geez, this name…) and Smell & Quim were also among them and this tape called “Thistonal k7” is a kind of extension of that seemingly fruitful partnership.

As a matter of fact I don’t have any problems in picking the track which I find more interesting here. The A-side with irr. app. (ext.) is a drone piece with a few layers drifting, swirling and intertwining with one another, and some natural sounds. Good to listen, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is the Smell & Quim part which I consider as particularly attractive. This almost 20-minute piece of ambient with delicate noise sequences fits my taste perfectly. Really atmospheric, giving the impression of infinite space. Showing the power of the cosmos and its decay at the same time. I enjoyed this one pretty much, I have to admit.

irr.app.(ext.) and Smell & Quim provided the sound sources later processed by Rasalasad. The album doesn’t have any particular concept. No concrete titles, no graphic design (even though the release itself is very aesthetic in its minimalism). That gives you a free hand for your own interpretation of what you hear, and what kind of images it may project in your head. Interesting stuff, nevertheless.
