Santa Sangre Playlist: The song you’d like to be played at your funeral

xxx

The idea is simple. We asked several artists to choose ten songs for ten different situations or activities (one song for each topic). This is the fifth playlist of the series. The topic: The song you’d like to be played at your funeral. Below you’ll find the description which artist has picked which song.

Daina Dieva: Arvo Pärt – Spiegel im Spiegel

Stefan Hanser [Anemone Tube]: James Plotkin – Clinton Street

Jan Roger Pettersen [Svartsinn]: Megadeth – In My Darkest Hour; “Slayer “Hell Awaits”. Or Obituary “Rotting Ways”! – Hehe. Uhm, jokes aside. Megadeth “In My Darkest Hour” was one of my fav songs in my teens, so that’s an idea. But really, I haven’t given it much thought to be honest. Hopefully I have much more time to figure that one out…”

Simon Heath [Atrium Carceri]: Jan Johansson – Visa från Utanmyra

Simon Balestrazzi: John Cale – Chorale; “I’d rather have no funeral at all, but this song would be appropriate for such an uneventful circumstance.”

Mathias Grassow: Led Zeppelin – Stairway To Heaven; “I really think on it, maybe one of my greatest songs of all time: Stairway To Heaven, or Turn Off The Century by Yes.”

Davide Borghi [Albireon]: My Dying Bride – The Light At The End Of The World

Leo [Niedowierzanie]: Cyril Diaz & His Orchestra – Voodoo; “At least people can have some fun”

Rudiger [Apoptose]: Joachim Witt – Herbergsvater; “Something that puts a smile on the face. I loved that one from the Neue Deutsche Welle era as a teenager. It’s hilarious.”

Cinder [Cindytalk]: Brian Eno – Here Come The Warm Jets

Tor Lundvall: The Durutti Column – Spent Time: “The saddest and most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.”

Edoardo Dionea Cicconi [Mantic]: Paolo Conte – Via Con Me

James Plotkin: Jon Hassell – Blues Nile

Grey Malkin[The Hare And The Moon]: Nico – Evening Of Light; “I always thought it would be a hoot to have The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’s ‘Fire’ start up just as I went behind the cremating curtain in my coffin. However I think I’d more likely prefer ‘Evening of Light’ by Nico. Of course it would be horrible for everyone who was there as it’s such a discordant, unsettling song but I find it deeply beautiful and frankly, it’s my funeral so I get to choose.”

Jana Komaritsa [Darkrad]: Reutoff – Sun Of Sleepless

Mathias Josefson [Moljebka Pvlse]: The Seekers – The Carnival Is Over

Erik Jarl: Abba – Arrival

Stephen Burroughs [Tunnels Of Ah]: Bix Beiderbecke – Singin The Blues

Pepijn Caudron[Kreng]: Andreas Scholl – Bach – Erbarme dich

Alice Kundalini
[She Spread Sorrow]: Laibach – Opus Dei (Life is Life)

Frederic D. Oberland [Oiseaux-Tempete]: Gavin Bryars – The Sinking of the Titanic; “One of my favorite piece ever. An happy-sad orchestra slowly dying into the deep blue.”

Jean-Yves Millet [Cent Ans De Solitude]: Joy Division – Decades

Lloyd James [Naevus]: Fields of the Nephilim – Last Exit for the Lost

Simone Salvatori [Spiritual Front]: Abba – The Winner Takes It All; “It rocks, it makes a perfect jingle for your last day”

Manabu Hiramoto [Shinkiro]: Dead Can Dance – The Host Of Seraphim

Nicolas Horvath: Philip Glass – Violin Concerto No. 1

Julian Percy [Last Dominion Lost]: Throbbing Gristle – What a Day

Mark Spybey [Dead Voices On Air]: Television – Marquee Moon; “Because it’s 10 minutes 47 seconds long and if you wanted to, given that the song starts again at the end, with a deft bit of remixing, you could make it to play more than once. It deserves to be played more than once. I’d want everyone who came to my funeral to listen to one of the most sublime moments in musical history: not to wallow in misery and saying vacuous goodbyes to a dead mans body.”

Hakan Paulsson [Sanctum]: Dead Can Dance – The Carnival Is Over

Robin Storey [Rapoon]: Wendy Carlos – Ode to Joy: Clockwork Orange; “Dear Wendy… perfect.”

Nina Kernicke [Allseits]: Monty Python – Universe Song

Lina Baby Doll [Deutsch Nepal]: Chrome – Firebomb; “Life is like a classic car… take care of and enjoy it.”

Maciek Frett [Job Karma]: Coil – The Dreamer Is Still Asleep

Tekla Mrozowicka [cétieu]: cétieu – Lato 2014

Russell Kent[Noothgrush/Alaric/ex-Big City Orchestra]: Optical*8 – Cripples & Kings; [couldn’t find the link anywhere… – stark]

Stefano Musso [Alio Die]: “Rudra Vina indian music, some Dhrupad, and/or Greek Empire music, perhaps”
