ENG: “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” is a joint initiative of Malignant Records and Kalpamantra, presenting past and present musicians tightening the muscles in the Maryland label’s roster. And in some cases we are dealing with projects that will likely be joining this already strong team under the sign of malignant tumor sometime in the future.
No need to be a genius to deduce what kind of music rules here. The title, graphic design and above all, the label and the name of the individual projects speak for themselves. Dark ambient, industrial and power electronics – in this game we play. The dose of music is so powerful that already in the middle of this release’s duration you’ll feel satisfied and fulfilled, but then again and again the next minutes of dark and viscous notes approach… with no end in sight. The publishers didn’t have to restrict themselves, because this release is available only in digital form.
The musicians participating in this project should mostly be known to fans of black drone and clattering machinery. We have presented many of them in Santa Sangre already. The pieces are mostly unpublished – I must admit that I didn’t check them one by one from this angle, but if some of them have already been released somewhere, they are isolated cases. Such as Sewer Goddess, whose perfect “Cheyne Stokes Hymn” appeared on our “Attich Ebulum” compilation.
A good idea – though not new, because this was already present on the previous joint Malignant and Kalpamantra compilations – is mating projects that have previously worked together in one track. On the “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” there are nine such duets and one trio: “Tragical” by TOMB, Bride and Skullskyr. All collaborations came out at least decent, though I’d distinguish “The Passing Light” by Caul and Terra Sancta, two projects sounding quite distant (at least if we are talking about the current aspect of Caul) within the dark ambient genre, but also designing consistent images in their own way. Australian empty spaces, clouds of sand, burning sun … it all can be found in “The Passing Light”, where both projects bring out the best of each other. I also enjoyed the return of R|A|A|N, whose “The Nacrasti” is still one of the greatest dark ambient monuments ever created. “Beyond Erratic Suns” is Stig’s collaboration with a regular guest in Santa Sangre, Inner Vision Laboratory. The two men prepared a piece of brilliant dark ambient, a bit space-like, but heavily lined with emotions.
Of the remaining tracks False Mirror’s “Lichtgestalt” definitely stands out. I remember that the first time I encountered the project was on the occasion of “North” released by Thonar Records. As for me, it was at most a mediocre effort. But “Derelict World” turned out to be very good, and subsequent pieces scattered across different types of compilations make me shudder to think how awesome another album of the German artist will sound. I also cherish Hall Of Mirrors which is grinding my bones into a fine powder, same as Theologian. It’s worth mentioning Megaptera (in a remix by Murderous Vision). I want a new, fresh disc smelling like a corpse’s guts. Personally, I am pleased that two musicians from Poland have found their place here, because in addition to the aforementioned Inner Vision Laboratory, we also have Abandoned Asylum from Łódź.
What else can I say – “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” clearly shows that the future of Malignant Records looks very bright. Have a good 2015.

PL: “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” to wspólna inicjatywa Malignant Records i Kalpamantra prezentująca byłych, obecnych muzyków prężących się w katalogu wytwórni z Maryland. A w kilku przypadkach mamy też do czynienia z projektami, które najprawdopodobniej dopiero zasilą i tak przecież już mocną ekipę spod znaku guza złośliwego.
Nie trzeba być geniuszem, aby wywnioskować jaka muzyka rządzi na kompilacji. Tytuł, oprawa graficzna i przede wszystkim szyld wytwórni oraz nazwy poszczególnych projektów mówią same za siebie. Dark ambient, industrial i power electronics – w taką grę właśnie gramy. Dawka muzyki jest tak potężna, że już w połowie czasu trwania wydawnictwa poczujecie się zaspokojeni a tu wciąż i wciąż nadciągające kolejne minuty ciemnych i lepkich dźwięków… i końca nie widać. Ograniczać się wydawcy nie musieli, albowiem to wydawnictwo jest dostępne tylko w wersji cyfrowej.
Muzycy partycypujący w tym przedsięwzięciu powinni w większości być znani miłośnikom czarnego dronu i chrzęszczącej machinerii. Bardzo dużą część sami już przecież prezentowaliśmy w naszym magazynie. Kawałki są niepublikowane – przyznam, że nie sprawdzałem każdego po kolei pod tym kątem, ale jeśli jakieś się zdarzają, to są to pojedyncze przypadki. Jak choćby Sewer Goddess, której doskonały “Cheyne Stokes Hymn” pojawił się na naszej “Attich Ebulum”.
Dobrym pomysłem, choć nie nowym, bo na poprzednich wspólnych kompilacjach Malignant i Kalpamantra taka idea była już obecna – okazało się parowanie projektów, które wspólnie stworzyły utwór. Na “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” mamy dziewięć takich duetów i jedno trio: “Tragical” autorstwa TOMB, Bride i Skullskyr. Wszystkie kolaboracje wyszły co najmniej przyzwoicie, choć ja wyróżniłbym: “The Passing Light” Caul i Terra Sancta, dwóch projektów w obrębie dark ambientu dość odległych brzmieniowo (przynajmniej jeśli mówimy o dzisiejszym obliczu Caul), ale jednocześnie projektujących na swój sposób zbieżne obrazy. Puste australijskie przestrzenie, chmury piachu, palące słońce… to wszystko znaleźć można w “The Passing Light”, gdzie oba projekty wydobywają z siebie to, co najlepsze. Cieszy również powrót R|A|A|N, którego “The Nacrasti” do dziś pozostaje jednym z największych monumentów darkambientowych, jakie do tej pory dane mi było usłyszeć. “Beyond Erratic Suns” to efekt współpracy Stiga z naszym stałym gościem w Santa Sangre, czyli Inner Vision Laboratory. Obaj panowie wykroili kawał efektownego, nieco kosmicznego, ale mocno podszytego emocjami dark ambientu.
Z pozostałych utworów na pewno wyróżnia się “Lichtgestalt” False Mirror. Pamiętam, że poznałem ten projekt przy okazji “North” wydanej przez Thonar Records i jak dla mnie była to rzecz mocno przeciętna. Ale już takie “Derelict World” okazało się bardzo dobre, a kolejne utwory porozrzucane po różnego rodzaju składankach sprawiają, że aż się boję myśleć jak będzie brzmieć kolejne pełne wydawnictwo Niemca. Również hołubione przeze mnie Hall Of Mirrors przemieliło moje kości na drobny proszek, podobnie jak Theologian. Warto też zwrócić na Megapterę (w remiksie Murderous Vision). Chcę już nową, świeżą i pachnącą jak trupie wnętrzności płytę. Osobiście cieszy mnie fakt, że znalazło się tu miejsce dla dwóch muzyków pochodzących z Polski, bo oprócz wspomnianego Inner Vision Laboratory mamy tu też łódzki Abandoned Asylum.
Co więcej mogę powedzieć – “Endless Descent Into Oblivion” dobitnie pokazuje, że przed Malignant Records przyszłość maluje się bardzo jasnych barwach. Udanego 2015 roku.
