ENG: If I have to describe any music that is so fragile that you get the impression it will break into myriads of microscopic particles with even the slightest touch, it would be the works of Birds of Passage. On the fourth full album (counting the one recorded with Leonardo Rosado), the artist coming from New Zealand, Alicia Merz, still follows the path taken at the beginning of this adventure. The path of ethereal dreampop ambient, as I used to define her work for personal purposes.
I must say that although Alicia hasn’t strayed from that path, she went through quite a distance. I remember my first encounter with Birds Of Passage, a few years ago. It was her debut, “Without The World”, an album that, regardless of its charming aura ultimately wearied me, even though I am prone to such sounds. “This Kindly Slumber” is not that different from the debut, but it managed to seduce me. It temptingly lulls while not allowing sleep.
It’s just seven songs clocking in about forty minutes. At that time, Alicia moves the listener into a place beyond time, a combination of Twin Peaks and her personal Wonderland. Even her name matches. It’s quite chilly but pleasant there. Light rain, fog covering the treetops and mountain peaks in the distance. It is all painted by an instrumental layer of intense ambient color. Sophisticated but ascetic, consisting of guitar sounds, delicate electronics and piano. I’m not sure if a bit of field recordings hasn’t been used here and there.
Yet it’s the voice of Alicia Merz which stands as a major component of all compositions. Located on the border of a whisper, murmur and singing.This association with Twin Peaks occurred to me mainly because of the vocal parts, because some connotations with Julee Cruise surely exist, though Alicia rather avoids pure angelic forms to focus instead on a seemingly careless, or perhaps in some way intimidated, yet endearing, form of singing. Undoubtedly, the reverb is doing its work, her voice is immersed in it. Anyway, I am not surprised that Dale Cooper & The Dictaphones invited the singer for a collaboration on their excellent album “Quatorze Pièces de Menace”.
The most beautiful part of the album is probably the second song, “Belle de Jour”. I am not able to tell if it’s a tribute to Catherine Deneuve in the memorable film by Buñuel, but since a few weeks I’m invariably moved by this song touching the most sensitive recesses of my soul. I’m a bit afraid to write that, but while listening to this one I feel like taking Alicia somewhere where nobody will find us. Almost wrote ‘… and put her in a golden cage’, but ok, that would be an exaggeration. There is also this last composition, “Lonesome Tame” where a storm is raging far away on the horizon, which, however, never comes over the listener’s head. The last few minutes, when Alicia’s voice melts in the air and we are left alone with an unusual ambient sequence, are excellent.
It’s also a good thing that “This Kindly Slumber” doesn’t last more than this, because with all its charm seventy minutes, or even an hour, could be too much. And so, for forty minutes, you can move to a different, somewhat mysterious world where nothing is as it seems, and where you will want to return again and again…

PL: Jeżeli o jakiejś muzyce mógłbym powiedzieć, że jest tak krucha, iż ma się wrażenie, że rozpadnie się na miriady mikroskopijnych cząsteczek przy choćby najdelikatniejszym dotknięciu, byłaby to twórczość Birds Of Passage. Na czwartej pełnej płycie (wliczając tę nagraną z Leonardo Rosado) pochodząca z Nowej Zelandii Alicia Merz wciąż podąża obraną na początku drogą eterycznego dreampop ambientu, jak zwykłem na własny użytek określać jej twórczość.
Muszę jednak stwierdzić, że choć Alicia raczej nie zbaczała z tej wspomnianej przed chwilą ścieżki, zdążyła przebyć po niej całkiem spory dystans. Pamiętam moje pierwsze zetknięcie z Birds Of Passage parę lat temu. To był jej debiut, “Without The World”, płyta, która przy całej swojej czarującej aurze ostatecznie mnie znużyła, mimo że jestem dość podatny na takie dźwięki. “This Kindly Slumber” wcale takie odległe od debiutu nie jest, a jednak potrafiło mnie uwieść. Kusząco usypiało jednocześnie nie pozwalając zasnąć.
To tylko siedem piosenek trwających w sumie około czterdzieści minut. W tym czasie Alicia przenosi słuchacza w miejsce poza czasem stanowiące połączenie Twin Peaks i jej osobistej Krainy Czarów. Nawet imię się zgadza. Jest tam dość chłodno, ale przyjemnie. Pada lekki deszcz, mgła zasnuwa wierzchołki drzew i szczyty gór w oddali. To wszystko odmalowuje warstwa instrumentalna o mocno ambientowym zabarwieniu. Wysmakowana choć ascetyczna, na którą składają się brzmienia gitary, delikatnej elektroniki i pianina. Nie jestem pewien czy nie wykorzystano też tu i ówdzie odrobiny nagrań terenowych.
Ale to głos Alicii Merz jest głównym składnikiem wszystkich kompozycji. Wokal mieszczący się na pograniczu szeptu, mruczenia i śpiewu. Głównie z powodu partii wokalnych nasunęło mi się skojarzenie z Twin Peaks, bo jakieś tam konotacje z Julee Cruise istnieją, aczkolwiek Alicia raczej unika czystych, anielskich zaśpiewów koncentrując się na tym z pozoru niedbałym, albo może w pewien sposób onieśmielonym, choć ujmującym mruczeniu. Niewątpliwie swoje też tu robi pogłos, w którym zanurzony jest wokal artystki. Tak czy inaczej, nie dziwię się, że Dale Cooper & The Dictaphones zaprosili wokalistkę do współpracy na ich doskonałym albumie “Quatorze Pièces De Menace”.
Najpiękniejsza na płycie jest chyba druga piosenka, “Belle de Jour”, “Piękność Dnia’. Nie jestem w stanie stwierdzić ile tu hołdu dla Catherine Deneuve w pamiętnym filmie Bunuela, ale mnie ten utwór nieodmiennie wzrusza, od kilku tygodni dotykając najwrażliwszych zakamarków mojej duszy. Aż strach pisać, ale słuchając tego mam ochotę zabrać Alicię gdzieś, gdzie nikt nas nie znajdzie. Prawie napisałem “… i zamknąć ją w złotej klatce”, ale ok, to byłaby przesada. Wyróżnia się też ostatnia kompozycja, “Lonesome Tame”, w której daleko na horyzoncie szaleje burza, która jednak nigdy nie nadciąga nad głowę słuchacza. Doskonałe jest ostatnie kilka minut, kiedy głos Alicii rozpływa się w powietrzu a my zostajemy sam na sam z niezwykłą partią ambientu.
Dobrze też, że “This Kindly Slumber” trwa ile trwa, bo przy całym jej uroku siedemdziesiąt minut, czy nawet godzina to mogłoby być zbyt wiele. A tak, na czterdzieści minut można przenieść się w inny, nieco tajemniczy świat, w którym nic nie jest takie, jak się wydaje i do którego będziemy chcieli wracać wciąż i wciąż…
