ENG: I don’t know that there’s a point to rating this album as “Thaw” isn’t Desiderii Marginis’ brand new work (the new album is going to be entitled “Hypnosis” and will see the light of day soon thanks to Cyclic Law) but a set of recordings from several compilations. A collection of tiny and grand reminiscences that have accumulated over the years in Johan Levin’s memory box.
“Thaw” certainly has a documentary and educational value, at least for younger fans of dark ambient, if such still hatch from somewhere. Yet I felt at home. Of all the tracks there was only I didn’t know, “Latency” from the “Viscera V. Zero” compilation, although I suppose that for people who have accompanied Johan in his musical expeditions since his early creative years, this one won’t be a surprise either. Most of these compilations aren’t particularly difficult to find, even today. At least for those who wish to find them. So perhaps the best way to treat “Thaw” would be as a record of Desiderii Marginis’ evolution – a project which undoubtedly is one of the brightest stars glittering in the northern sky.
“Thaw” represents fourteen years of Johan’s wanderings through deserted cathedrals and misty moors. From 1998 and the memorable compilation “The Absolute Supper”, where he presented “Chaos Undivided” (also my first encounter with the project) until 2012 and “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” from “Behind The Canvas Of Time” (Cryo Chamber). For many, this may be the first opportunity to become familiar with the three tracks of “Lost Signals From Unknown Horizons”, a triple split with Moan and Artefactum (by the way, Moan, we miss you!). Johan’s origins are rooted in classic – although evidently crafted with style and taste – dark ambient, specific for Northern Europe. Throughout the years, he has experimented with industrial dirt, coming straight from the dark wave traditions, acoustic guitar and even rhythmic forms. Over the years that element of darkness started to shrink, while the melancholy that has been present from the very beginning, gained more strength with each consecutive release.
Of course this compilation doesn’t include all the ‘subsidiary’ works of Desiderii Marginis. For some there wasn’t enough room in “Thaw” – I personally miss “This Vale Of Tears” from “The Last Bleak Days”. But as a medium that allows one to embrace the whole history of the Swedish project at one blow, the disc comes off quite alright. It’s always better than the typical ‘greatest hits’. However, if you know Desiderii Marginis well, take a look at the tracklist first, before you decide to purchase it. You may find out that you already have these pieces and it makes no sense to buy them again. Unless you need to own everything signed with that moniker. As an introduction to the project however, or for those that have started to monitor its progress rather recently, it’s good stuff. Finally I have to mention the graphic design in “Thaw”. The visuals also possess this classic dark ambient feeling, but there’s no denying that it’s a very aesthetic type of classic.

PL: Nie wiem czy jest jakikolwiek sens oceniać tę płytę. “Thaw” nie jest nowym, samoistnym dziełem Desiderii Marginis – tym będzie dwupłytowy “Hypnosis”, który już wkrótce powinien ukazać się nakładem Cyclic Law – lecz kolekcją nagrań z różnego rodzaju składanek. Zbiorem mniejszych lub większych wspominków, które nagromadziły się na przestrzeni lat.
“Thaw” na pewno posiada wartość dokumentalną i edukacyjną, przynajmniej dla młodszych fanów dark ambientu, o ile tacy gdzieś się jeszcze wykluwają. Ja natomiast poczułem się jak w domu. Z wszystkich umieszczonych tu kompozycji wcześniej nie znałem zaledwie jednej tj. “Latency” ze składanki “Viscera V. Zero” i podejrzewam, że dla osób, które od lat towarzyszą Johanowi w jego muzycznych ekspedycjach ta płyta nie będzie żadnym zaskoczeniem, bo może poza paroma pozycjami te kompilacje nie były i nawet dziś nie są szczególnie trudno dostępne. Przynajmniej dla chcącego. Dlatego najlepiej chyba potraktować “Thaw” jako zapis ewolucji Desiderii Marginis, bez wątpienia jednej z najjaśniej połyskujących gwiazd na północnym niebie.
Znajdujemy tu czternaście lat tułaczki Johana po opuszczonych katedrach i zamglonych wrzosowiskach. Począwszy od 1998 i pamiętnej kompilacji “The Absolute Supper”, gdzie Johan przedstawił “Chaos Undivided” (to było też moje pierwsze spotkanie z projektem) aż do 2012 i “”The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” z “Behind The Canvas Of Time” (Cryo Chamber). Dla wielu to może być pierwsza okazja aby zapoznać się z trzema trackami z “Lost Signals From Unknown Horizons”, potrójnego splitu z Moan i Artefactum (tak przy okazji: Moan, tęsknimy!). Zaczynał Johan od klasycznego – choć oczywiście spreparowanego z klasą i smakiem – dark ambientu rodem z północy Europy. Na przestrzeni lat eksperymentował z industrialnym brudem, zagrywkami rodem z dark wave, gitarą akustyczną a nawet formami rytmicznymi. Z czasem tego mroku znajdowało się w jego twórczości jakby coraz mniej, za to element melancholijny, choć zawsze w muzyce Desiderii Marginis obecny, zyskiwał na sile z płyty na płytę.
Nie są to rzecz jasna wszystkie “poboczne” utwory Desiderii Marginis, kilka na “Thaw” się nie zmieściło – mnie brakuje “This Vale Of Tears” z “The Last Bleak Days”. Ale jako medium pozwalające za jednym zamachem ogarnąć całokształt twórczości szwedzkiego projektu, płyta wypada całkiem w porządku. Zawsze to lepsze niż typowe “greatest hits”. Aczkolwiek jeśli dobrze znacie projekt, to zanim zdecydujecie się na zakup, zerknijcie na tracklistę, bo może się okazać, że słyszeliście już te kawałki i nie ma sensu kupować ich po raz kolejny. Chyba, że musicie mieć wszystko sygnowane tą nazwą, wtedy nie wnikam. Na początek przygody z projektem, albo dla osobników śledzących jego poczynania od niedawna, to jest to fajna sprawa. Na koniec wspomnę jeszcze o oprawie graficznej “Thaw”. Także od strony wizualnej to darkambientowa klasyka, ale nie da się ukryć, że klasyka to niezwykle estetyczna.
