ENG: NID is an Italian quartet and “A Fair Masquerade” is their full–length debut. Previously, they recorded and self–released the EP “Nature in Disguise”.
“A Fair Masquerade” is one of those albums that are always difficult to write about. It’s a decent and well performed mixture of neofolk, neoclassical and martial. The Italians know what this music is about. But at the same time there’s nothing here that would attract my attention for a longer period of time. Lassitude? In part this may be the case, but a certain conservatism on behalf of the musicians might actually be the key, a reluctance for stepping into the unknown. Or maybe it’s loyalty to their ideals; this virtue is, after all, very respected within neofolk circles.
We have thirteen songs on the album – quite diverse, I honestly have to admit. The Italians reveal a different part of their soul in each one. Sometimes more lyrical and intimate, sometimes NID falls into more of a fighting mood – enough with self-pity, time to beat the shit out of someone. I’m pulling your leg a bit, but it would be really nice to see some distancing and a deeper breath in these fairly rigid genre frameworks now and then.
The best moments of the album are those where the musicians mix the tempos and atmospheres within one song. Like in “Ultimo”, probably my favorite track on “A Fair Masquerade”, starting in a subtle manner, but heralding an imminent threat. The sharp spurt, a short-term earthquake in the middle of the piece and the increasing tension until the end. All achieved by using only neofolk attributes, which as we know are quite limited.
And then there are ups and downs, sometimes it’s more interesting, sometimes less, but I never feel like I’m about to jump out of my slippers in ecstasy. Nor jump out the window in despair. Because that’s precisely what this release is: pleasant to listen and easily digestible, but not able to trace any special stigma in the listener’s mind. I would also perhaps distinguish “Of Rattles And Dust”, a very nice though fairly typical neofolk ballad with Rome echoes sounding in the distance and even a bit of Simone from Spiritual Front vocal manner.
On the other hand I must admit that editorially La Esencia did very well, because the graphic design – especially the pictures inside the booklet – might not be the most original in the world, but it is indeed aesthetically pleasing. As for the album, I wouldn’t recommend it very strongly. But I wouldn’t discourage any of you as well. Listen to samples, if you like neofolk I think “A Fair Masquerade” might fall within your tastes. If you are skeptical, this album probably won’t change your point of view regarding this genre.

PL: NID to pochodząca z Włoch czteroosobowa grupa, a “A Fair Masquerade” jest ich pełnowymiarowym debiutem. Wcześniej nagrali i wydali własnym sumptem EP-kę “Nature in Disguise”.
“A Fair Masquerade” to jedna z tych płyt, o których pisze mi się dosyć trudno. To poprawna i dobrze zagrana rzecz z pogranicza neofolku, martial i neoklasyki. Włosi są osłuchani, widać, że wiedzą o co w tej muzyce chodzi. Ale jednocześnie nie ma tu nic, co przyciągnęłoby moją uwagę na dłużej. Zmęczenie materiału? Po części być może tak, ale na pewno swoje robi tu też pewna zachowawczość muzyków, niechęć przed postawieniem kroku w nieznane. A może to wierność ideałom, cnota wszak bardzo poważana w neofolkowych kręgach?
Na płycie mamy trzynaście piosenek, dość zróżnicowanych, trzeba to uczciwie przyznać. Włosi odkrywają przed słuchaczem różne oblicza swojej duszy – raz jest bardziej lirycznie i intymnie, innym razem NID wpada w nastrój bardziej bojowy – koniec użalania się nad sobą, czas spuścić komuś łomot. Trochę sobie żartuję, ale czasem naprawdę przydało by się nieco dystansu i głębszego oddechu w tych dość sztywnych ramach gatunkowych.
Najlepiej muzycy wypadają w momentach, kiedy mieszają tempa i nastroje na przestrzeni jednego utworu. Tak jest choćby z “Ultimo”, moim ulubionym na “A Fair Masquerade”, zaczynającym się w sposób subtelny, ale zwiastujący nadciągające zagrożenie. Gwałtowny zryw, krótkotrwałe trzęsienie ziemi w środku kawałka i rosnące napięcie aż do końca. Wszystko osiągnięte z wykorzystaniem wyłącznie neofolkowych atrybutów, które jak wiemy sę dość mocno ograniczone.
A potem bywa różnie, czasem bardziej ciekawie, czasem mniej, ale nigdy nie czuję jakbym miał zaraz wyskoczyć z kapci w ekstazie. Ani wyskoczyć przez okno w rozpaczy. Bo taka to właśnie płyta, która dobrze wchodzi i jest łatwo przyswajalna, ale szczególnego piętna w umyśle słuchacza nie odciska. Wyróżniłbym jeszcze “Of Rattles And Dust”, bardzo ładną, dość typową balladę neofolkową z pobrzmiewającymi gdzieś tam wpływami Rome, a w warstwie wokalnej dostrzegam nawet manierę Simone ze Spiritual Front.
Natomiast trzeba przyznać, że edytorsko La Esencia stanęła na wysokości zadania, gdyż oprawa graficzna a w szczególności zdjęcia wewnątrz książeczki, może jakoś szczególną oryginalnością nie grzeszą, ale są estetyczne i mogą cieszyć oko. Samej płyty jednak nie polecam jakoś gorąco. Ale i nie zniechęcam. Posłuchajcie sampli, myślę, że jeśli lubicie neofolk, “A Fair Masquerade” może przypaść wam do gustu. Jeśli jesteście sceptyczni, to tą płytą na pewno swej opinii o gatunku nie zmienicie.
