ENG: Although Zoharum defines “Tether” as an EP, the display on the CD player shows almost eighty minutes. I wonder if anyone already acceded to the Guinness Book of Records. Yet there’s only about twenty–five minutes of the very new music. The rest of the album is consisted of remixes. Prepared by intriguing guests to say the least, but only remixes…
The first two new tracks, “Rosids” and “Guess” are a straight line continuation of “Cold Ground” with all the attractions offered by that album. These are rather slow compositions, devoid of vocals in the traditional sense of the word. Doom riffs and drum rhythms wind up the foreground, ambient soundscapes combined with various types of electronic ornaments form the background. Note that “Guess” is painted with clearly brighter colors. Deprived of apocalyptic atmosphere, breathing with almost positive emotions. A bit reminiscent of “Last” from “Cold Ground”, although “Guess” is even more spacious. The third new offering, “Murder The Future”, with all these droning riffs and slightly surreal rhythm layers is simply awesome and it’s difficult to add anything more – the structures are more blurred and the atmosphere is taken straight out of a subtle nightmare. The fourth premiere composition, “Ecclesiastes”, is placed at the very end of the disc, which is totally understandable since such a dark ambient and quite minimal epilogue thrown somewhere in the middle of the album would have distorted its structure. The piece itself didn’t actually thrill me, but it’s nice to also witness this attitude on composing new sounds from Michal.
I already swore off remix albums a couple of times in the past, treating such time filling between full length albums as more or less subtle cadging. I don’t know what was Echoes Of Yul intention, and I won’t be particularly dwelling on the matter. The thing is that we have a couple of premiere songs on “Tether”, and for me they’re the main feature of the album. The remixes all in all turned out to be quite well prepared – most of the invited guests bring their personal contribution while maintaining the Yul spirit. James Plotkin did a great job, his interpretation of “The Stand” has gained on monumentalism – a trance journey through a 21st century Far East megalopolis. “The Mission” is surprising, by iconⒶclass, more widely known as as Dälek . Many may find the hip–hop parts disagreeable – I congratulate the courage. Michal also remixes himself in quite a cool way. In “Last” he left distorted, bass drones and on this foundation he now constructs a completely new, peaceful, somewhat abstract form.
Other remixes are simply all right. There’s no disgrace in the warm ambient created by Maciek Szymczuk (who slowly becomes a “Zoharum head remix man”) and Steve Austin ‘s dirty madness (Today Is The Day) or the deconstructions by Different State and Stendek, who proposes a slightly trip–hop form. Obviously I’d prefer a new full–length album by Echoes Of Yul, but as an aperitif “Tether” does the job. Apparently it foreshadows a tasty main dish, sometime in the future.

PL: Choć Zoharum określa “Tether” mianem EP-ki, wyświetlacz odtwarzacza CD pokazuje prawie osiemdziesiąt minut. Ciekawe czy ktoś zgłosił już akces do Księgi Rekordów Guinnessa. Premierowej muzyki jest tu jednak raptem około dwadzieścia pięć minut. Reszta to remiksy. Przygotowane, przez co najmniej intrygujących gości, ale tylko remiksy…
Z nowych utworów, dwa pierwsze “Rosids” i “Guess” to w prostej linii kontynuacja “Cold Ground” z wszystkimi atrakcjami jakie tamta płyta nam oferowała. Utrzymane w wolnych tempach, pozbawione tradycyjnie rozumianych wokali. Doomowe riffy i perkusyjny rytm nakręcają pierwszy plan, ambientowe tapety łączone różnego rodzaju elektronicznymi zdobieniami tworzą tło. Przy czym “Guess” jest malowany wyraźnie jaśniejszymi barwami. Pozbawiony apokaliptycznej atmosfery, tchnący prawie pozytywnymi emocjami. Trochę kojarzy mi się z “Last” z Cold Ground”, choć numer to jeszcze bardziej przestrzenny. Trzecia nowa propozycja, “Murder The Future” wraz ze swymi dronującymi riffami i nieco surrealną warstwą rytmiczną jest zwyczajnie zajebista i trudno tu coś więcej dodawać – struktury są bardziej rozmyte a atmosfera żywcem wyjęta z subtelnego koszmaru. Czwartą premierową kompozycję, “Ecclesiastes”, Echoes Of Yul umieszcza na samym końcu płyty i jest to w sumie zrozumiałe, gdyż taki darkambientowy, dosyć minimalistyczny epilog wrzucony gdzieś w środek mógłby nieco zaburzyć konstrukcję płyty. A sam numer? Nie porwał mnie, choć fajnie, że Michał próbuje również takiego podejścia podczas komponowania nowych dźwięków.
Na płyty z remiksami psioczyłem już niejednokrotnie traktując takie wypełnianie czasu pomiędzy poszczególnymi pełnoprawnymi płytami jako mniej lub bardziej subtelne naciągactwo. Jakie były intencje Echoes Of Yul, tego nie wiem, i nie będę się tu nad tym szczególnie rozwodził. Istotne, że mamy na “Tether” kilka świeżych kompozycji i to one stanowią dla mnie gwóźdź programu. Przeróbki autorstwa zaproszonych gości wypadają w sumie nieźle – większość wnosi coś od siebie zachowując przy tym Yulowego ducha. James Plotkin odwalił kawał dobrej roboty, jego interpretacja “The Stand” zyskała jeszcze na monumentalności – to transowa podróż przez dwudziestopierwszowieczne dalekowschodnie megalopolis. Zaskakuje “The Mission”, którym zajął się iconⒶclass, bardziej kojarzony jako Dälek. Partie hiphopowe wielu mogą odrzucić – ja gratuluję odwagi. W “Last”, w fajny sposób Michał remiksuje samego siebie – pozostawił przesterowany, basowy dron na jego podstawie budując zupełnie nową, spokojną, nieco abstrakcyjną formę.
Pozostałe remiksy są po prostu w porządku. Blamażu nie ma i w przypadku ciepłego ambientu Maćka Szymczuka (który pomału wyrasta chyba na naczelnego “remiksowywacza” Zoharum), jak i brudnego szaleństwa Steve’a Austina (Today Is The Day) czy dekonstrukcji Different State i Stendeka, który proponuje formę lekko trip-hopową. Wolałbym oczywiście nową pełną płytę od Echoes Of Yul, ale jako aperitif “Tether” spełnia swoje zadanie. Oby zwiastowało smaczne danie główne, kiedyś tam w przyszłości.
