2013 Through My Eyes: Jayrope [Air Cushion Finish]

jayrope

“Occasionally they call it “homeopathic punk”. Since 2007 Berliners jayrope & Lippstueck and a wealth of music friends collaborate in Air Cushion Finish. It is an ever-changing real-time band environment, cinematically drawing from vocalism, postfolk, electronica, ambient, feedbacks, cathedral dub, dada, noise & sometimes drastically slowed down acoustic dancefloor tracks. Way too many influences.” [Official ACF website]

How would you summarize this past year on artistic and personal level?

I guess one could get sucked into believing everything’s going down just by regularly reading or watching the news. However, my artistic 2013 was splendid. A whole new world of experience started by working as a musical director, composer and live musician for the Unusual Symptoms dance theatre company in Bremen throughout almost the whole year. This was and will continue to be a world of inspiration, of invention and with a company, that consists of a wealth of different characters and specialists. People who are great in what they do. I can only try to continue to learn from them. What a present of 2013.

On another note improvising music is always leading beyond borders, this year was awesome again with Air Cushion Finish and musicians and new friends and friendiennes we happened to get to know during doing this.

Personal is all about love… no more comment on that one 🙂

What album you listened to most often this year (not necessarily released in 2013)?

Way too many (again, can’t choose just one…), but in no particular order, not very representative 😉
– Murcof & Philippe Petit – First Chapter
– Kulku – the hungry soul (now actually waiting for the next one even more)
– Olivier Messiaen – Quatur pour la fin du temps
– Maurice Ravel – Trio en A mineur
– Ugly Casanova – Sharpen your teeth
– the Swans – a piece of sky
– Saåad – Orbs & Channels
– Rope – It’s no fun to compute
– The Swamps – Move (EP)
– Efrim Menuck – High Gospel
– a bunch of GYBE!, among that the new album Allelujah Don’t Bend Ascend
– Volcano the Bear – Classic Erasmus Fusion / Amidst The Noise And Twigs
– these artists: Harvey Mapcase, Vedette with Neil Carlill, Ey Bekot, Heliodrome, Silver Mt. Zion, William Basinski, John Hudak, Shelley Hirsch, David Weinstein, Jupiter Moll, Sun Ra, Molloy and his bike, Su Arbot,

What was the best cultural experience not related to music?

My daughter. Travelling outside of Germany. Discovering the Spanish speaking world and some of their many different cultures. Catalunia.

And best trip? Most beautiful or magic place you visited this year?

Barrio de Gracia, Barcelona, Carrer Fraternitat. The market hall nearby.

What was your greatest disappointment of 2013?

Simply, that believing into something or somebody doesn’t mean it’s going to work out. It tends to be rather blinding yourself and that is a teaching experience, so it’s not disappointing per se.

Did you learn anyting particular this year?

You stop complaining and you stop bad routines, so then you start moving on, eventually to better places. It’s in your own hands. Besides fate and the matrix (eh eh eh). Also i started to get into orchestration, which was something i kind of lost touch to in the late 80s. It’s a nice challenge!

Plans, hopes, expectations for 2014?

Further minimizing the use of computers. Building more custom electro-acoustic instruments. Learning Spanish. Besides that i am just curious.
