“There is no so-called ‘history’ as Sui Generis Umbra has almost no features of a regular band. As eLL claims, it exists somewhere in the space since ever. eLL and Maciej are mere souls who simply try to render the Energy audible.” [SGU biography]
How would you summarize this past year on artistic and personal level?
On artistic level, 2013 brought propitious light to the thick darkness that had been covering Sui Generis Umbra for a decade. Together with Maciek we have been nurturing the potential it possesses and hoping to listen to the upshot one day. As for personal level, 2013 was very peaceful and quiet on the surface while mayhem was raging deep inside. My mind was tugged by extremes which surprisingly resulted in something positive, though unexpected – house move to a very magical city, Edinburgh. However, when it all seemed to have a happy ending, the painstakingly built happiness through all 2013 was smashed to pieces by 2014, on its very first day. You cannot imagine what a horribly happy new year’s eve it was. Unforgettable.
What album you listened to most often this year (not necessarily released in 2013)?
Everything by Skrillex – I absolutely love this guy for who he is and obviously for the fact that he is a dubstep genius. It is far beyond my comprehension how it is at all possible to have such control over sound design and to be able not to control and limit your imagination at the same time! He made me explore the genre throughout 2013 but haven’t found anything equally appealing. Also, it is an amazing antidepressant, there is no way this sound is not going to kick my ass and boost energy. Drop it hard skrill. There is one more artist that caught my attention and I would like to take this opportunity to mention this dark ritual ambient act. Namely, Lamia Vox from St Petersburg. Mind blowing vision and sound with an oustanding composition where ritual ambient builds on classical/symphonic music. Absolutely epic. I send her best wishes and look forward to her next creations.
What was the best cultural experience not related to music?
Not related to music? That will be hard… I guess Art and Design Degree Shows in May/June – me and my friend travelled across Scotland to see (and criticize!) the exhibitions in all Schools of Fine Arts. It was very thoght-provoking fun.
And best trip? Most beautiful or magic place you visited this year?
Edinburgh. Now I have a privilege to reside in this place. There is no point in describing it, you just need to come and experience it with your own mind.
What was your greatest disappointment of 2013?
No snow in December. Again.
Did you learn anyting particular this year?
Yes, the same painful lesson I learn every year – never depend on anyone but yourself.
Plans, hopes, expectations for 2014?
No hopes, no expectations. Fuck plans.
