ENG: From an aesthetic point of view this release fits my taste perfectly. It’s sort of a postcard with a minimalist design – I’m hardly surprised as “Første ” is part of Hibernate Recordings’ ‘postcard’ series – and a mini-CDr containing a bit more than twenty minutes of music. It looks simple, but very charming. Maps & Diagrams music isn’t that ascetic, though of course, we can say that about any orchestral music breaking loose. Yet it enchants and captivates the listener no less than the visual side of the release.
Tim Martin isn’t just some rookie. He’s been making music as Maps & Diagrams for nearly ten years – during that time he recorded a number of albums for Nomadic Kids Republic, Time Released Sound and Static Caravan among others. “Første ” is a six-track portion of suggestively organic, slightly abstract ambient, which engaged my attention from the first notes of “Meyeri”. It seems like deep beneath the sea-and-wind sound surface, almost dub forms are concealed. A short piece, like all here, but hiding a lot of not necessarily obvious layers. Equally beautiful is “Heldelberg”, which takes the listener on a walk somewhere on the edge of the world where a strong wind whips the cheeks; one can see the clouds under his feet. Organic sequences, delicate synth parts and powerful air currents mercilessly drifting ahead, breaking tree branches, form the basis of “Helderberg”.
Further impressions (it’s hard to call these short fragments of music ‘tracks’) maintain this organic, yet slightly surreal atmosphere. For example, “Gassefjord” references to the old synth school, sneaking it somewhere between the lines, but it all looks as if taken from another dimension, not necessarily something that has its source in our own past. “Puynax” and “Goldfuss” force us to close our eyes and project the mind-visions of mighty fjords and auroras brightening the night sky.
A short piece of ambient it is, but very beautiful, characterized by what I appreciate so much in this kind of music – its organic nature and a certain understatement. Tim blends natural and synthetic recordings in such a way that sometimes one can’t be distinguished from the other. Serving “Første ” in such a dreamy, slightly hazy form only adds charm to this ambient miniature. I really like it.

To coś w rodzaju minimalistycznie zaprojektowanej kartki pocztowej – nie dziwota, “Første” jest częścią “pocztówkowej” serii Hibernate Recordings – oraz miniCDr zawierający nieco ponad dwadzieścia minut muzyki. Prezentuje się to skromnie, ale bardzo urzekająco. Muzyka Maps & Diagrams aż tak ascetyczna nie jest, choć rzecz jasna nie ma tu też mowy o jakimś orkiestralnym rozpasaniu. Ale czaruje nie mniej niż oprawa wizualna.
Tim Martin nowicjuszem nie jest. Muzykę robi od bez mała dziesięciu lat, jako Maps & Diagrams nagrał szereg płyt, m.in. dla Nomadic Kids Republic, Time Released Sound czy Static Caravan. “Første” to sześcioutworowa porcja sugestywnie organicznego, nieco abstrakcyjnego ambientu, który ujął mnie już od pierwszych dźwięków “Meyeri”, gdzie wydaje się jakby głęboko pod morską i wietrzną powierzchnią dźwiękową kryły się formy nieomal dubowe. Krótki kawałek, jak wszystkie tutaj, ale kryjący w sobie wiele niekoniecznie oczywistych warstw. Równie pięknie brzmi “Heldelberg”, który przenosi słuchacza w przestrzeni gdzieś na krawędź świata, gdzie silny wiatr smaga po policzkach, a pod stopami widać chmury. Sekwencje organiczne, delikatne partie syntezatora i te silne prądy powietrzne bezlitośnie sunące przed siebie, łamiące gałęzie drzew stanowią bazę “Helderberg”.
Kolejne impresje (trudno nazwać tak skromne fragmenty muzyki “utworami”) utrzymują ten organiczny, ale jednocześnie nieco surrealistyczny klimat. A przykładowo w “Gassefjord” gdzieś między wierszami dosłyszeć można także nawiązania do syntezatorowej starej szkoły, ale wszystko to wydaje się jakby wyjęte z innego wymiaru, niekoniecznie czymś co faktycznie miało miejsce w przeszłości. “Puynax” i “Goldfuss” zmuszają do zamknięcia oczu, projektują w umyśle wizje potężnych fiordów i rozjaśniających nocne niebo zórz polarnych.
Krótka to płyta, ale bardzo piękna, charakteryzująca się tym, co tak bardzo w ambiencie cenię, czyli organicznością, także pewnym niedopowiedzeniem. Tim zlewa nagrania naturalne i syntetyczne w sposób taki, że czasem nie da się odróżnić, co jest czym. A podanie “Første” w takiej onirycznej, zamglonej nieco formie dodaje tylko uroku tej ambientowej miniaturce. Bardzo mi się podoba.
