ENG: A relatively new outfit, Legionarii fit many stereotypes of the typical martial-industrial sound, conspicuous in that they share an aesthetic and thematic similarity to many peers . This at least makes perfect sense on a rhythmic level, dominated by the ominous, reverberative backdrop of snares and timpani.
The theme of Legionarii is admittedly a totalitarian one; not one that preaches an ideal, but seeks to convey a strong mental image of it through the use of samples, and as hinted within song titles evoke the Third Reich and the Axis Powers (‘Ahnenerbe’, ‘Sieg!’, ‘The Tripartite’) and the Roman imperium (‘The Rise Of The Legion’, ‘Iron Legion’), the Second World War (‘Global Front’, ‘Ost Und West’) Thus far, nothing out of the ordinary for this style, though one ought to be more contextual in observing the musical approach of Legionarii, as they are more than a one-trick pony.
Structures are typically quite similar to that of Triarii and Puissance, but they are perhaps less melodious and concentrate more on creating a foreboding, dark atmosphere that greatly fits with the likes of Karjalan Sissit. The samples are reminiscent of the Irish Area Bombardment, similarly occult, and the outlook is a similarly ‘European’ one as is evidenced by many luminaries of the post-industrial music sphere, though perhaps more ambiguous and mysterious in tone.
The use of synths occasionally strays from the choral, martial, medievalist aesthetic. Very modern sounding oscillations and synth lines creep in occasionally; one would only need to add a lead vocal or a more pronounced verse-chorus structure and the comparison to the Russian, Danish based Laibach worshipping esotericists Parzival would be perfectly legitimate.
‘Iron Legion’ is a competent release, aesthetically sound, and will most certainly tick the right boxes for those fond of this style, though personally this lacked the punch evidenced in the best work of their peers (mentioned above), the eclecticism that I quite enjoy from the likes of Kreuzweg Ost, or the martial-pop hybrid that the likes of Derniere Volonte have mastered in recent years.

PL: Stosunkowo młoda formacja, Legionarii, wpasowuje się w wiele stereotypów typowych dla brzmienia martial-industrial. Muzycy dzielą ze swoimi pobratymcami podobną estetykę i tematykę. Ma to miejsce szczególnie na poziomie rytmicznym, zdominowanym przez złowieszczo pobrzmiewające w tle werble i kotły.
Tematyka utworów Legionarii w swojej istocie jest totalitarna; nie opiewa jakiegoś ideału, lecz stara się przekazać mocny, mentalny jego obraz poprzez wykorzystanie sampli; jak można się domyślać, tytuły utworów odwołują się do III Rzeszy i państw Osi (“Ahnenerbe”, “Sieg!”, “The Tripartite”), jak również imperium rzymskiego (“Global Front”, “Ost Und West”). Nic więc nadzwyczajnego dla tego gatunku, chociaż powinno spojrzeć na muzyczny warsztat Legionarii w szerszym kontekście, ponieważ potrafią oni więcej, niźli tylko jedną sztuczkę.
Konstrukcje muzyczne zazwyczaj bywają całkiem podobne do tych autorstwa Triarii i Puissance, choć są chyba mniej melodyjne i bardziej koncetrują się na tworzeniu profetycznej mrocznej atmosfery typowej dla Karjalan Sissit. Sample przywołują na myśl irlandzką formację Area Bombardment – są podobnie tajemnicze. Także wizja świata w ich twórczości jest typową perspektywą “europejską”, podobnie jak u licznych luminarzy muzycznej sceny post-industrialnej, chociaż jest ona być może mniej jednoznaczna i bardziej tajemnicza w brzmieniu.
Użycie syntezatorów co jakiś czas wyrywa słuchacza z chóralnej, wojennej i średniowiecznej estetyki. Miejscami wkradają się także bardzo nowocześnie brzmiące oscylacje i partie syntezatorów. Przydałoby się jedynie dodać wiodący wokal i bardziej wyrazistą strukturę wersyfikacyjną, żeby dokonać w pełni słusznego porównania do rosyjskiego – choć działającego w Danii – ezoterycznego Parzivala, wiele zresztą czerpiącego z Laibacha.
„Iron Legion” jest dobrym wydawnictwem, elegancko brzmiącym, z pewnością trafiającym w gusta fanów tego gatunku, chociaż – osobiście mówiąc – brakuje mi wyrazistości, która jest obecna w najlepszych dokonaniach ich pobratymców (wymienionych wyżej), eklektyzmu, który całkiem lubię w formacjach pokroju Kreuzweg Ost, czy synkretycznego martial-popu, w którym celują w ostatnich latach twórcy tacy jak Derniere Volonte.
