Harvest Rain – Gentile Peasantry [Polish/English]

PL: Bardzo dobrym, choć wciąż niedocenianym zespołem jest ten Harvest Rain. To jedna z tych grup, które często wrzucane są do dark- czy neofolkowego wora, podczas gdy z folkiem w jakiejkolwiek odsłonie w zasadzie nie mają nic wspólnego. Wydana przez Rage In Eden płyta “Gentile Peasantry” jest kolejnym potwierdzeniem tej jakże światłej tezy.

“Gentile Peasantry” to trzecia kolaboracja pochodzącej z Południowej Karoliny grupy z białogardzką wytwórnią. Chyba najciekawszą i najdojrzalszą jak na moje ucho, choć wbrew pozorom nie są to piosenki pierwszej świeżości – wg Jasona Thompkinsa powstały one w tym samym czasie, co utwory na “Blood Hymns” wydanym w 2007 roku przez francuską OPN. Można właściwie powiedzieć, że jeden album jest dopełnieniem drugiego.

Pisałem, że Harvest Rain nie ma nic wspólnego z folkiem, ale to działa na tej samej zasadzie co twórczość Death In June chociażby. Przyjął się ten gatunkowy szyld, trudno, trzeba z tym żyć. A Harvest Rain ma kilka punktów stycznych, jak choćby charakterystyczna praca gitary akustycznej. Także wokal nierzadko zbliża się do maniery Douglasa (np. “Iron Flowers”) i taka ogólna, melancholijna, choć nie płaczliwa aura unosząca się ponad dźwiękami.

Ale Harvest Rain idzie dalej, wykracza poza te umowne darkfolkowe ramy kierując swe kroki w stronę cold wave’owej poetyki. Pojawia się gitara elektryczna, głęboki bas, specyficzna rytmika, nawet w brzmieniu nawiązują – choć nie wprost –  do tuzów gatunku. Najciekawiej moim zdaniem wypada to w “Thuletide” i “Limbs and Wind”. Nie pogniewałbym się jednak, gdyby muzycy dodali w brzmienie właśnie jeszcze więcej piwnicy, więcej chłodu.

Ale to dobra płyta, bardzo dobra nawet. Pomimo niekoniecznie optymistycznej atmosfery, rzecz to lekka, przyjemna w odbiorze, swobodnie wykonana. Pozbawiona kwadratowości i ciężkości wielu przedstawicieli gatunki. A i romansowanie z zimną falą wychodzi Harvest Rain na dobre. Zresztą muzycy pierwsze swoje kroki stawiali właśnie w tego typu dźwiękach a fascynacja neofolkiem przyszła później. Z pewnych rzeczy jak widać się nie wyrasta. I czasem wychodzi to na zdrowie.

ENG: A very good, but still underrated band is this Harvest Rain. This is one of those groups that are often thrown into the dark/ neofolk sack, while the folk factor of any kind, is in fact absent here. Published by Rage In Eden, “Gentile Peasantry” is another confirmation of this very original and enlightening thesis.

“Gentile Peasantry” is the third collaboration of the South Carolina group with the label from Bialogard. As for my ear perhaps the most interesting and mature, but despite appearances, these are not the freshest songs in the world – Jason Thompkins says they were created at the same time as the songs on “Blood Hymns” published in 2007 by OPN from France. You can actually say that one album is a complement of the other.

I wrote that Harvest Rain has nothing to do with folk music, but it functions on the same principle as Death In June work. The moniker catched on, it happened, so we have to live with it. And Harvest Rain has several points of contact with DIJ, such as the specific acoustic guitar work. Also the vocals are often close to Douglas’ manner (listen to “Iron Flowers”) and there’s that overall melancholic, but not tearful aura hovering over the music.

But Harvest Rain goes further beyond the contractual darkfolk framework, directing its steps toward cold wave poetry. Electric guitars, deep bass, a specific rhythm refer – albeit not directly – to the characteristics of the genre. “Thuletide” and “Limbs and Wind” are the brightest examples. However I wouldn’t have objected if the musicians had added to the sound some more coldness, more “cellar”.

Still this a good album, very good even. Although not necessarily conveying an optimistic atmosphere it’s music that is very pleasant to listen, freely composed and performed. Devoid of the squareness and severity of many representatives of the genre. Also this romance with cold wave does Harvest Rain a lot of good. Besides, the musicians took their first steps in such types of sounds and the neofolk fascination came later. As you can see you don’t grow out of certain things. And sometimes it’s to our benefit.
