autor recenzji / reviewed by: stark || PL:“Sky Burial” to trzeci album amerykańskiego projektu Echtra, będący jednocześnie pierwszym segmentem planowanej trylogii o tytule “Passage Cycle”. Wydany przez Temple Of Torturous materiał zawiera tylko dwa, ale za to długie utwory – według informacji prasowej – z pogranicza black metalu, doomu i ambientu. Według mnie dominuje tu składnik numer dwa.
Jak twierdzi sam muzyk, “Sky Burial’ to dźwiękowy obraz zakończenia egzystencji na tym łez padole. Jak przystało na taki koncept, muzyka nie mieni się kolorami tęczy, do tańca również nie porywa. To mocno kontemplacyjna odmiana gitarowego grania, w zasadzie pozbawiona jakiejkolwiek dynamiki, choć do dronowych ekstremistów projektowi również bardzo daleko. Podwaliną obu utworów jest gitara akustyczna, której muzyk nie wykorzystuje bynajmniej do wywijania wirtuozerskich obertasów – za pomocą prostych w sumie chwytów buduje atmosferę przygnębiającą, choć nieszczególnie mroczną czy przerażającą. Tak, zdecydowanie w tym przypadku obrana przez muzyka koncepcja tematyczna znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w muzyce. To pożegnanie. Ostatni rzut oka na słońce, niebo, drzewa, ptaki. Klamka zapada i następuje przejście do następnego świata. Albo w wieczną ciemność.
Tło dla akustycznego grania stanowią rozciągnięte w czasie i przestrzeni gitarowe riffy, rozlane plamy ambientowe, sporadyczne wokale, przypominające mi nieco pierwszego wokalistę Anathemy. W “Sky Burial II” na chwilę pojawia się żywsze, blackowe tempo, niczym desperacki zryw, próba chwycenia choćby jeszcze kilku chwil. Ale znika ta sekwencja jeszcze szybciej niż się pojawia. Nie jest to szczególnie wyrafinowane formalnie granie, także same muzyczne wątki nie różnią się zbytnio od siebie. Muzyk stawia na monotonię i trans, nie czaruje żadnymi sztuczkami, buduje atmosferę za pomocą prostych środków wyrazu. Udaje mu się to nieźle, płyta, choć nie wybitna, potrafi chwilami urzec.
Warto dodać, że wydawnictwo zawiera również DVD z zapisem występu na żywo Echtra. Interesujące uzupełnienie materiału. Ogólnie warto się tym zainteresować, bo i muzyka porządna, i wydanie estetyczne, i DVD na dodatek. Jeśli bliskie są wam takie klimaty, to zamiast się ciąć, posłuchajcie Echtra. I tak wyjdzie na jedno.

ENG: “Sky Burial” is the third album of the American project Echtra. It is also the first segment of a planned trilogy, entitled “Passage Cycle”. Published by Temple Of Torturous, it contains two long tracks that according to the press release are placed on the borderline between black metal, doom and ambient music. In my own view the component number two dominates on the album.
“Sky Burial” is an aural image of ending existence in this vale of tears. As befits such a concept, the music does not glitter in rainbow colors, it isn’t very danceable either. This is a very contemplative variety of guitar playing, basically devoid of any dynamics, although from drone extremists Echtra is also very distant. The foundations of both songs are acoustic guitars, that the musician doesn’t use for flaunting or fancy virtuoso tricks – rather by using simple means of expression he creates a depressing environment, though not particularly dark or scary. In this case the thematic concept chosen by the artist is fully reflected in the music. This is a farewell. A last glimpse on the sun, the sky, the trees, the birds. The die is cast, it’s time for transition to another world. Or eternal darkness.
The background for the acoustic sounds is comprised of guitar riffs extended in time and space, ambient soundscapes and occasional vocals, reminding me a bit of the first Anathema singer. In “Sky Burial II” a vivid, black metal tempo appears for a moment, like a desperate impulse, trying to grasp at least a few more moments. But this sequence disappears even faster than it appears. Technically, this isn’t a particularly sophisticated performance. The musical themes do not differ much from each other. The artist stakes on the monotony and trance, using them to paint the atmosphere. He does it well as this album, although not outstanding, sometimes puts a spell on a listener.
It is worth noting that the release also contains a DVD with an Echtra live performance. An interesting addition. Overall it is worth the interest, because we have decent music, aesthetically released, plus a DVD on top of that. If you are into such moods, listen to Echtra rather than cut yourself. It’s all the same anyway.
