ENG: Does dust have its own language? As the particles drift on currents of air, do they dream, is theirs an existence of consciousness. This album is the soundtrack for such ponderings, an alienated exhortation that attempts to delineate the molecular and sub-atomic thoughts which whirl about us continually without pause. Fittingly enough, this album revealed itself to me while watching someone dust… because while the explosions of all those myriad and minute fragments may be silent to us, on another wavelength of comprehension they are quite devastating. The sheer scale of a universe being re-arranged by the casual flick of some feathers.
Retro 2038 functions on this (and many other) levels, the finite and the fantastical. Through the eye of a proverbial needle; with this work you can catch a glimpse of your own private heaven and also as these compositions twist and snake about you can begin to celebrate the return of Ivan Pavlov to micronautic musical exploration. Quite simply, this record is element 103 on the table: outside of a laboratory it could not have been created and it is only thanks to the mechanisms of digital media that it has been sealed up and permitted to linger. Hearing the delicate threads of electronic beads threading their way down slivers of grounding foundational layers you come to realize what COH have achieved is nothing short of remarkable.
This is a terribly fragile record. As I listen, I perceive a dew laden web pulled further and further apart until the tendrils which hold everything together begin to fray and groan under the strain. It is this balancing act of stress and stoicism which Retro 2038 exudes from the flitting opener Retro Tech Overture right down to the last hint of activity on Method as Fun. He’s decided to complete the concepts he flirted with on the Patherns EP and has pulled it off with both precision and panache. That is to say, he may not have been able to finish them then but he definitely has now.
Getting new work from COH has become one of life’s grandest pleasures for me because his level of capability and design have exceeded my wildest expectations. What kind of technical proficiency does a person have to possess to do work of this caliber!? Was there some kind of contract signed on parchment with a brimstone ball-point pen or has Pavlov emerged on the other side of experimental artistic vision where he’s the only one left and the rest of us are struggling valiantly to keep up, having only a few precious scraps of detritus to let us know where he’s been.

Ten album to soundtrack dla takich rozważań, próba opisania molekularnych i subatomowych myśli wirujących bez przerwy wokół nas. Eksplozje wszystkich tych miriad cząsteczek dla nas mogą być niesłyszalne, ale na innych długościach fal percepcji dokonywać tam się może dzieło zniszczenia. Wszechświaty zmieniane przypadkowym machnięciem piórka.
“Retro 2038” działa na tym właśnie poziomie (jak i na wielu innych), na skończonym i na fantastycznym. Przez oko przysłowiowej igły; przez tę płytę możesz dostrzec błysk swego własnego, prywatnego nieba. A gdy z czasem te kompozycje zaczynają oplatać się wokół ciebie, możesz zacząć świętować powrót Iwana Pawłowa do mikronautycznej muzycznej eksploracji. Ten materiał jest po prostu pierwiastkiem 103 na tablicy, nie mógłby powstać poza laboratorium a trwać może wyłącznie dzięki sztucznym mechanizmom. Słysząc delikatne elektroniczne nici sunące po stanowiących fundament warstwach zdajesz sobie sprawę, że to, co osiągnął tu COH jest po prostu wspaniałe.
To niesłychanie wręcz delikatna płyta. Gdy jej słucham, widzę skropioną rosą pajęczynę rozciągającą się coraz dalej i dalej, aż utrzymujące całość nici zaczynają się uginać pod ciężarem i presją. Takie właśnie równoważące się wzajemnie akty napięcia i spokoju wypływają z “Retro 2038” od unoszącego się w powietrzu “Retro Tech Ouverture” aż po ostatni przejaw aktywności, “Method as Fun”. Muzyk zdecydował się zamknąć koncepty, z którymi flirtował już na EP-ce “Patherns” i zrobił to z precyzją i polotem. Wtedy być może dopełnić ich nie mógł, ale zdecydowanie udało mu się to teraz.
Zapoznawanie się z nowymi dziełami COH stało się dla mnie jednymi z największych przyjemności życiowych, jego zdolności kompozytorskie przekraczają moje najśmielsze oczekiwania. Jakież umiejętności techniczne musi posiadać ktoś zdolny do stworzenia dzieła takiego kalibru?! Czy to jakiś rodzaj kontraktu podpisany na pergaminie siarczanym piórem kulkowym, czy to Pawłow wyłonił się po drugiej stronie eksperymentalnej wizji artystycznej pozostawiając nam kilka cennych szczątków, aby dać nam znać gdzie był.
