PL: Irfan to bułgarski projekt parający się muzyką ethno/world i jeśli chodzi o underground, to grupa, która odniosła największy sukces poza granicami mojego kraju. I jak dla mnie jest to jednocześnie najlepszy obok Dead Can Dance projekt w tym gatunku. Wydaje ich francuski label Prikosnovenie, grali mnóstwo koncertów, między innymi z Arcaną, jak również z zespołami ethno. Nazwa grupy pochodzi z perskiego i powiązana jest z islamskim mistycyzmem. Można ją tłumaczyć jako “Gnoza”.
Muzyka Irfan jest niezwykle bogata w dźwięki, cechuje ją mnogość użytych instrumentów, ale mimo to, wszystko jest tu podporządkowane głosowi ich głównej wokalistki (Denitsa Seraphimova) – wspaniały wokal mogący przywodzić na myśl Lisę Gerrard. Denitsa, sama będąca fanką Dead Can Dance, również używa “języka serca” (transowy sposób śpiewania w nieistniejącym języku, używając słów nie mających znaczenia, wymyślanych na poczekaniu. Metoda spopularyzowana przez Lisę Gerrard właśnie). Aczkolwiek w niektórych piosenkach stosują język starobułgarski (ortodoksyjny słowiański), łacinę czy średniowieczny hiszpański (kastylijski i galicyjski). Na przestrzeni lat przez grupę przewinęło się kilka wokalistek koncertowych, ale jeżeli chodzi o nagrania studyjne, zawsze były one realizowane z Denitsą Seraphimovą, oprócz utworu “Hagia Sophia”, w którym głosu użyczyła inna wokalistka.
Na dzień dzisiejszy Irfan ma dwie płyty na koncie – tytuł tej drugiej to “Seraphim” (całkiem podobny do nazwiska wokalistki, nieprawdaż?) Kupiłem swój egzemplarz na koncercie w Sofii trzy lata temu. Dziewięć mistrzowskich utworów, które mogę polecić wszystkim fanom Dead Can Dance, czy też innych, bardziej podziemnych projektów etno, jak choćby GOR.
“Wierzymy, że muzyka jest aktem duchowym”. Otóż to.

ENG: Irfan is an ethno/world band from Bulgaria and it’s definitely the most successful Bulgarian underground band beyond the frontiers of Bulgaria. For me this is actually the best ethno/world band next to Dead Can Dance. Released by the french label Prikosnovenie (and Prikosnovenie is the slavic word for “touch”), they had a numerous concerts in many countries in Europe together with bands like Arcana and other ethno-influenced projects. The name of the band is of Persian origin and is related to the Islamic mysticism. Its closest translation is “Gnosis”.
Irfan’s music is very rich of sounds as they use a really huge variety of acoustic instruments but still is somehow centered around the voice of their female singer (Denitsa Seraphimova) – a gorgeous voice that reminds of Lisa Gerrard. Being a Dead Can Dance fan herself, she uses the “language of the heart” too (that’s a trance-like way of singing in a non-existing language, with meaningless words made up on the moment, a method that’s been made popular by Lisa Gerrard). Still, for some songs they use old Bulgarian (orthodox Slavonic), Latin and Medieval Spanish (Castilian/Galician) language.
During the years the band has featured few different female singers for live gigs and touring but their studio records are always made with Denitsa Seraphimova, except for the track “Hagia Sophia” which features another singer.
As of now Irfan are having 2 cds released and the second one is called “Seraphim” (pretty similar to the surname of their singer, isn’t it). I got my copy at a live gig 3 years ago in Sofia. 9 masterpiece tracks I can recommend to every single Dead Can Dance fan and also to fans of more underground ethno projects like GOR for example.
